The 4N Nottingham & Derby 'Christmas on Bondi Beach' Challenge

About The Challenge

Imagine receiving news that a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition that will change not only their life but the lives of the whole family. In one short sentence, everything changes.

This has happened recently to one of our 4N family. They have been able to make some precious memories at the seaside because of me & dee. We want to enable more families to be able to create their own memories that will last forever.

So what could we do?

Well, we can all walk!

So that's our challenge .. between 25th April 2019 and 24th December 2019 we have pledged to collectively walk the 10,542 miles from Nottingham to Bondi Beach in Sydney.  If there are enough of us we might even get back again :-) !!

Every day/week we will submit our miles on this website.

So we'd love your support to help make more memories.

About the me & dee charity/media/whatwedo/library/mariaformal2.jpg

“If you had a loved one who was living with a life limiting condition, if your family was facing a short and uncertain future together, you would want to make the time they had left together as special as possible.....wouldn't you?”

The me&dee registered charity based in Derby was formed in 2006 to create special memory experiences when time is short or precious and to date, more than 2,000 families have been helped through the support of our charity.

My name is Maria Hanson and I am the founder and CEO of the charity. Before setting up the charity, I had had 18 major operations performed, some of those lifesaving, but causing huge amounts of scarring and leaving me with two stoma bags. My cousin Delia had cancer.

We were amazed at how many charities had huge amounts of tick box forms, excluding many including myself, who could not tick a box when applying for help, and a huge need to justify yourself, and also, little personal interaction.

Delia and I decided to break this mould, making the application form very simple, no tick boxes and support at the end of the phone 24/7. Sadly, Delia passed away at the end of 2005. I continued with me&dee as a legacy to her and run it in the way that we both envisioned. No awards are looked for, I have remained unsalaried and working 7 days a week for the 12 years of our charity.

What do we do?

We have a static caravan on a lovely site at the seaside town of Mablethorpe. This is Delia's hide-away. It is a large luxury caravan, with central heating, large decking and beautiful views across lakes and woods, in a very quiet area.

Unfortunately, delia's hide-away is not wheelchair accessible internally.

Our newly acquired fully accessible caravan, Maria's hide-away, now gives us the ability to offer holidays to people who use a wheelchair for mobility and with the addition of a double bed we can accommodate up to 5 people.
It is equipped with full gas mains central heating. It has a large bedroom with one double and one single bed, 1 twin bedroom, a separate large wet room and toilet, large fully equipped kitchen with low worktops, a dining area and large lounge with tv.

It has a fully accessible ramped decking area, that overlooks the lake, fields and trees, nothing better than watching the spectacular sunsets whilst relaxing on the large raised patio area at the back of the caravan.

Included in the holiday is a sea front new and modern beach hut with running water and electricity. The back of the beach hut opens on to Queens Park with boating lake, cafe, large paddling pool and host of activities giving the best of both worlds, beach front seclusion at the front, activities at the rear.

Our criteria is for anyone of any age with any life threatening, life shortening and terminal condition. In this way, we help many families facing short and uncertain futures who cannot tick cancer and leukaemia and brain tumour boxes, such as those with aplastic anaemia, MS, Cerebral Palsy and a whole host of conditions.
